lighting design for a dance performance
Lighting design is about space and color, especially for dance, light shapes dancers’ body that lighting is truly a part of the choreography in my design. Pixelated choreographed by Jessica, is a piece that explores human in this techno world. Dancers are pictured as pixels in this choreography. This piece also experiments with shapes, lines, and space in the movement, projection, and lighting to illustrate a futuristic world of the tini tiny world that pixels dwell. The lighting for this piece creates a minimal, geometric, and clean style, which emphasizes the techno futuristic feeling and highlight the sharp and athletic form in the choreography.
LIGHTING TREATMENT & VISUAL REFERENCE
SECTION 1
The world still looks like a mystery, and dancers are wandering in the space. They look like they are finding their path to somewhere.
The lighting for this part is mysterious and create a sense of curiosity, wondering, and neutrality.
SECTION 2
The dance starts to become more dynamic. The movement is faster and sharper than section 1. The choreography explores speed change and how it changes the space. I chose turquoise and amber to add to the upbeat vibe of the music, and dividing the space with colors.
SECTION 3
The third section is about freedom, the movement is liberated. They are stepping into another path. The movement got bigger and more joyful, and there is a lot of jumping and moving through the space. So, I styled lighting into a energetic and athletic feeling by introducing color on the pink and magenta side.
